Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Faculty
Virginia Western Community College (VWCC) is accepting applications for a full-time Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Faculty in the School of Career and Corporate Training (CCT). Reporting to the CCT Career Training Specialist, collaborating with assigned Course Coordinator(s), and at times working with the Corporate Training Specialist, the full-time instructor will prepare for classes and fulfill a variety of technical instructional assignments, including conventional machine tool operation, blueprint reading/engineering drawings, precision measurement tools, set-up, programming, and operation of CNC lathes and mills, and the operation of CAD/CAM systems. The position will be responsible for successfully teaching and implementing curricula such as specific year-long Department of Education-approved curriculum for high school students and more accelerated workforce preparation for adult learners. The incumbent will teach and help coordinate activities related to work-based learning, including registered apprenticeships, and actively assist with student recruitment. This is an innovative new position in CCT, intended to bring about the growth and success of students, the machining program, and regional employers. The incumbent will fulfill a variety of instructional and program-related responsibilities to support the mission of CCT. This is a hands-on teacher/advocate/ambassador position requiring the willingness and ability to engage stakeholders and grow a winning program. Success is to be measured by key performance indicators such as course and program reputation, instructor evaluations, course completion, FastForward credential attainment, enrollment growth, stakeholder feedback, and success of graduates. Dependent on student interest and program demands, the majority of time is expected to teach machining courses, with possibility of mechatronics fundamentals instruction as well.
NOTE: This is a restricted professional faculty position subject to continued availability of funds and programming needs.
Required Qualifications
HS diploma or equivalent is required. A minimum of 10 years of experience in an advanced manufacturing environment, with an emphasis on machining, may include coursework in a Community College or University setting, using a variety of metalworking tools, processes and machines, primarily lathes and mills, and with experience in CNC / G-code programming.
Must hold a current, or actively apply for and attain, Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Teaching License for high school student instruction—within the VDOE required grace period. Must be or become certified in all National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Level 1 credentials within six months of hire (11 credentials). This position will require excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to develop syllabi and exams; ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum and assessments; as well as the ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate degree in a Career and Technical Education field preferred. Classroom Machining instruction experience, providing instruction in accelerated formats geared towards certification exam preparation. Experience teaching high school students. Experience teaching adult learners. Experience recruiting students. Experience serving as an employer/student liaison. Demonstrated track record of high level of student credential and institutional outcomes with the ability to deliver instruction in the classroom and machine shop. Desired areas of expertise include: machine setup, machining applications, programming with ProtoTrak, Haas, Mazak and Fanuc controls and simulators, process planning, precision measurement, inspection, print reading, GD&T and symbols, metallurgy, cutting tool selection and assembly, machine maintenance and shop and personal safety. Interest, ability, and flexibility to support learning in related disciplines such as mechatronics fundamentals topics.
