The Dell Medical School Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin, in conjunction with Central Texas Community Health Centers “CommUnityCare,” seeks a psychologist to join our clinical faculty and serve on our clinical team in the Women's Reproductive Mental Health of Texas (WRMH) program in Austin, Texas. We seek a psychologist with a comprehensive approach to mental health care who will help our Department and the WRMH achieve our goal of working with our community partners to develop clinical, educational and research initiatives that honor the communities of central Texas while revolutionizing how women get and stay mentally healthy proximate to reproductive life events that are unique to women, including preconception planning, pregnancy and the postpartum period.

The Department promotes innovation in training methods, research and service to the community. Our department leads psychiatry education for the Dell Medical School and its post-graduate programs train mental health professionals to become 21st-century leaders in the fields of psychiatry and psychology. Clinical services provide well-informed, evidence-based care for individuals and families in multiple general medical and specialty behavioral health settings with an active and strong presence in community settings. Importantly, the Department is leading efforts at UT Austin to execute cutting-edge basic and clinical research that illuminates the underlying neurobiological causes of psychiatric disorders and identifies novel treatments for psychiatric disorders.

To help us achieve these goals, we seek candidates who are committed to providing care within a broad and growing community and have a strong record of providing exemplary care and treatment that restores hope and helps patients live healthier, fuller lives. A clinical assignment will occur through our department's collaboration with CommUnityCare within the Intensive Outpatient Care programs to provide consultation and direct care for patients suffering from co-occurring conditions, including mental illness, addiction, homelessness and chronic medical conditions.

The psychologist will provide initial diagnostic evaluations, consultation and follow-up treatment for women struggling with mental health issues in a collaborative, interprofessional team approach. Depending on leadership skills, the candidate may progress to clinical and/or academic leadership positions.

The successful candidate's appointment within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Dell Medical School requires regular participation in educational activities with fellows, residents, medical students, and other trainees. The psychologist will have additional opportunity for collaboration that allows for the pursuit of innovative clinical programming, education and research initiatives.

CommUnityCare is a large, multisite Federally Qualified Health Center serving Travis County with a tenacious commitment tocomprehensive health care. Through their Healthcare for the Homeless programming, CommUnityCare offers treatment through specialized clinics, mobile clinics at community sites, shelter-based clinic and a street medicine program. Treatment is person-centered, collaborative and team based. The outpatient psychologist will add expertise to the existing team of talented and dedicated clinicians who attend to all determinates of health.

In collaboration with patients, families (as defined by the patient), and staff across all disciplines, the psychologist is responsible for providing direct and appropriate mental health care to adults with mental illness and co-occurring disorders (substance abuse, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and medical illness) within the CommUnityCare system. As a member of the clinical team, psychologist provide direct care to referred patients via face-to-face or telehealth visits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide informed clinical care to women proximate to child-bearing and other reproductive life events unique to women, extending the WRMH's outreach to underserved communities in Texas.
  • Work with Dell Medical School leadership, faculty colleagues and other clinical staff to develop excellence in service and clinical care and ensure access to care for all communities in Texas.
  • Teach fellows, residents, medical students, and other trainees, in addition to implementing novel training programs pertinent to reproductive psychiatry in a broad context.
  • Develop and foster an atmosphere of scientific and academic inquiry in conjunction with trainees and researchers within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Conduct scholarly work, an expectation of all Dell Medical School faculty. Examples of scholarly work include, but are not limited to, publishing work in high-impact journals, presenting work at national and international meetings and working with care providers and health care delivery networks to implement research in practice.
  • Facilitate research initiatives, such as participant recruitment, conduction of clinical research and dissemination of new learning and innovations.
  • Collaborate with other schools at The University of Texas at Austin and across The University of Texas system.
  • Actively participate in the activities of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and abide by all required Departmental policies.
  • Other responsibilities and clinical duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) from an APA or CPA accredited program in clinical or counseling psychology
  • Completion of an APA or CPA accredited psychology internship
  • Formal postdoctoral training and/or experience in providing reproductive mental and behavioral health services
  • Record of clinical service, teaching and scholarly activity in the academic medical setting
  • Unrestricted license to practice psychology in the State of Texas or ability to obtain prior to appointment
  • Eligible and committed to attaining board certification through the American Board of Professional Psychology
  • Eligible for appointment to the Dell Med faculty as an assistant, associate or full professor
  • Eligible for appointment to the medical staff at Ascension Seton
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish strongly preferred
