SNAP-ED Nutrition Educator
Description
This position is a 12 month, term appointment. The full-time position is part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - Education (SNAP-Ed) conducted by the University of Maryland Extension. The educator will deliver nutrition education programs to low income residents in Frederick County with emphasis on reaching food supplement (stamp) recipients. The position will be housed in the Frederick County Extension office in Frederick, MD.
Salary will be commensurate with experience with a base salary of $56,226.

Job Duties
- Participates in nutrition education services by providing program planning, evaluation, and development of standards for direct education and PSE (Policy, System and Environmental) outreach, specifically designed to address needs of the low-income SNAP-Ed audience.
- Provides technical knowledge and training for SNAP-Ed program.
- Performs nutritional outreach activities, including developing educational materials for SNAP-Ed staff and para-professionals within our partner locations.
- Evaluates wellness efforts and nutrition plans for approved partner locations
- Supports community partners by providing nutrition recommendations for menus, food environment and wellness policies.
- Deliver nutrition education programs to SNAP participants on a day to day basis in Frederick County, Maryland.
- Travel to locations where training will be delivered and to meetings with community contacts.
- Work independently to establish and maintain relationships with local schools and community groups that have eligible SNAP populations. Develop a network of relationships with key partners.
- Schedule educational classes with approved locations, including single and series lessons. Maintain a monthly class calendar for locations within assigned county.
- Conduct age appropriate training seminars and food preparation demonstrations for both child and adult audiences. The possible venues for conducting training include: elementary & middle schools, grocery stores, child care centers, farmer’s markets, senior centers, libraries, YMCA and other community outreach venues.
- Communicate weekly with Partner Agencies and Community Outreach staff, to develop ongoing curriculum, community outreach activities, new locations for classes, and continued networking within the community to increase influence within the counties assigned.
- Manage expenses within monthly budget while achieving maximum impact for the program.
- Program preparation activities include: reviewing lesson plans, ordering materials, shopping for food demonstration supplies, and assembling materials for lessons and activities.
- Create supplemental teaching materials and handouts that adhere to the SNAP-Ed program requirements. (Examples: poster as visual aid for students, newsletter as take home handout for school children)
- Assist Partner Agencies and Community Outreach team with special projects as needed.
Program Evaluation
- Conduct participant evaluations using pre and post-tests. Evaluate progress of program participants for annual summary and report.
- Conduct pre-test and post-tests for each series of classes. Check forms for accuracy. Maintain hard copies of records for audit purpose.
- Collect required demographic information on the clients served. Follow-up with contacts at the education site for any updates or changes.
- Submit required data in a timely manner. Data is tracked using Excel spreadsheets and the web based software. Check in with State SNAP-Ed Coordinator for any follow-up to data submission.
- Conduct program evaluations of the locations via web based survey tool. Review for possible improvement areas.
- Identify new community partnerships within the assigned counties that serve eligible food stamp recipients. Create opportunities where SNAP Education can be delivered.
- Participate in team development of program evaluation and staff training regarding delivery and evaluation methods.
Administrative
- Track expenses for classroom materials, food supplies, office supplies, and travel mileage.
- Complete monthly time and effort tracking documents.
- Submit required documentation for expenses ensuring accuracy and timely submission to Sr. Director.
- Maintain necessary SNAP records for audit purpose. This includes hard copies and electronic files.
- Inventory materials and supplies.
Qualifications:
- BA or BS in related field, such as Nutrition, Dietetics, Community Nutrition, or Health & Wellness. Also eligible a bachelor’s in any field and registration by the American Dietetics’ Association and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting. High School degree and 5+ years’ relevant experience can be substituted for Degree
- Must be patient, understanding, flexible, and have a lot of energy.
- Must demonstrate teaching skills and the ability to implement approved curriculum.
- Willing to adapt and work hard as part of a team pursuing an objective.
- Ability to physically able to perform the tasks required.
- Have the ability to network/market the program to gain the necessary audience for participation in the program.
- Ability to build relationships with the community.
- Have a passion for delivering a nutrition program and working with all demographics.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle. Travel within assigned county area is required to fulfill duties. Mileage incurred by work duties will be reimbursed.
