The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) is seeking applications for a Campus Energy Manager within the Sustainability Division. This position reports to the Sustainability and Research Programs Manager and will be responsible for the oversight of all aspects of campus energy management with the goals of reducing facility energy use, fossil fuel dependence, GHG emissions and utility costs.
This position works in parallel with three divisions to implement crosscutting energy projects at various scales. The Energy Manager works with Sustainability Division to develop energy visions and goals, report energy progress to internal and external partners, and provide expertise and guidance on energy-related issues.
The Energy Manager works directly with the Sustainable Trades and Utilities Maintenance Manager along with key trades-staff members on energy-related operations and maintenance issues. This group works together to identify, prioritize and address repairs and maintenance of building systems and components that are contributing to energy inefficiency or excess and unnecessary consumption.
The Energy Manager works with Facilities Planning, Design and Construction group of the Physical Plant and Facilities Office to prioritize, develop and support capital projects related to energy conservation and other energy-related initiatives such as capital projects and major building renovations.
Requires knowledge of facilities management, utility rate structure and billing; mechanical systems and their impact on building energy use; building controls; building management systems; electrical; HVAC; and building occupant utility usage. Specific duties include:
- Oversee all aspects of campus energy management, including energy conservation and efficiency, energy generation and procurement, renewables and clean energy options, operations and maintenance, and energy accounting.
- Create an energy management plan. Implement and periodically update existing clean energy master plan for main campus and guide new energy audit and master plan for regional campuses.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive energy tracking and monitoring system for the Syracuse and regional campuses using existing building energy dashboards. Make campus energy data available to various stakeholders in appropriate formats for staff, faculty, students and external partners.
- Hold monthly meetings with cross-functional energy team including the Sustainable Trades and Utilities Maintenance Manager and key trades and facilities staff.
- Develop and implement a protocol for measurement and verification of energy projects.
- Conduct walkthrough audits for the Syracuse and regional campuses and prepare reports that identify savings opportunities (CapEx, O&M, etc) for further investigation; provide reports to NYSERDA and the facility for review and comment
- Review building operational schedules and procedures to identify operational savings opportunities and develop preventative maintenance plan.
- Schedule biennial employee training sessions to address skill gaps and identified energy saving opportunities.
- Develop and propose energy and productivity projects.
- Apply for grants and incentives when applicable to support clean energy projects and administer such funding within the requirements of the granting authority.
- Work with the ESF Sustainability Division and ESF Communications Office to regularly develop and share energy news stories with the public and campus community through various mediums including press releases, campus news blurbs, social media posts, infographics, fact sheets, webpage content, presentations, and videos.
- Complete internal and external reporting in a timely fashion including: draft quarterly savings reports that document results from both capital upgrades and operational changes, project management check-ins with NYSERDA via conference call at least once per month, and final report for the four-year sponsored pilot period that documents overall effort and progress against facility energy goal.
- Develop energy best practice case studies including savings metrics, for online publishing.
- Develop road map of the energy manager on-boarding process, for online publishing, that documents the pilot program participant’s experience, with recommendations and adjustments made to reflect lessons learned during the process and best practices identified.
- Share results, best practices and lessons learned with peers through meetings and conference presentations.
- Note this position is partially funded by NYSERDA for a period of four years. The Energy Manager must complete all NYSERDA reporting requirements and deliverables on schedule including stakeholder meetings, energy management plan, quarterly reports, final report, agendas and notes from energy team meetings, data from implemented projects, etc.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or related field.
- Five years full time related professional experience.
- Must obtain (AEE) Certified Energy Manager status within one year of appointment.
- Must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle.
- Must have ability to travel occasionally to campus properties that are remote from the main campus in Syracuse, NY.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional experience in excess of eight years in an engineering discipline or related setting.
- Experience as an energy manager on a multi-building campus or similar setting.
- Certified Energy Manager.
- Licensed Professional Engineer with experience concentrated in the design of building mechanical systems.
- Hands-on experience with building system commissioning or the maintenance of building mechanical systems.
- Experience in programming of Building Management Systems including ability to write/edit code.
- Knowledge of the architecture of data communication systems.
- Experience in the use, creation and manipulation of spreadsheets and databases.
- Experience with building automation systems, controls, and energy dashboards.
Duration: This position is a sponsored pilot program in partnership with NYSERDA. The pilot program is four years in duration. At the end of the pilot program, the position will be a permanent position at SUNY ESF.
