Adjunct Faculty, Film & Moving Image (Writing)

Summary:
Adjunct faculty in the School of Design's Department of Film & Moving Image are responsible for teaching courses in film and moving image writing in the BS Film & Moving Image degree program, working with students on the creation and critical analysis of professional screenplays. Your responsibilities may include involvement in off-campus, evening or weekend duties, as well as student recruitment, retention, and placement efforts. Your academic department may also provide you with more specific set of job expectations.

Department: School of Design, Arts, and Communication: Film & Moving Image

Education/Experience:
MFA in screenwriting or creative writing, plus teaching experience at the college/university level and at least three years of professional screenwriting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Special consideration will be given to candidates with significant experience bringing their scripts to production and distribution.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
Industry knowledge of screenwriting structure and formats

Industry experience reading and analyzing professional screenplays for film and television

Industry experience using a variety of professional screenwriting software

Demonstrated teaching experience in the area of film and moving-image writing

Demonstrated history of developing and maintaining a professional network in support of professional contacts and opportunities for students.

Ability to read, listen, and communicate information and ideas through spoken and written language.

Ability to use various means of communication (e.g. telephone, computer, other electronic devices) to work with students, peers, and outside contacts.

Ability to work effectively with peers in the department, School of Design, other departments at the University, and in Career Services for advising, mentoring, and placement of majors in Film & Moving Image.

Demonstrated ability to teach and evaluate undergraduate students.

Familiarity with instructional techniques designed to reach students of varying preparation levels and abilities.

Excellent communication skills are essential and a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, service and technology application in the classroom.

All courses require strong technology and organizational skills and experience working with Blackboard or a similar platform.

Ability to travel physically to field trip site locations regionally.

Valid driver’s license with good driving record; must be insurable.

Physical Requirements:
Position may require sitting or standing for long periods of time. Position requires the ability to speak clearly and effectively for an extended period of time. Position requires additional hours for meeting and events, including evening; some weekend meetings may be required.

Essential Functions:
Teaching responsibilities include time spent in the classroom or in telecommunications courses and in immediate preparation for them; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught; preparing teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies, maintain quality control of student productions, and practica; reviewing written examinations and papers; evaluating presentations, and supervising independent study projects.

Professional service implies the use of academic and professional expertise to serve your profession, the University, and the community.

Administrative responsibilities include student advising, writing syllabi, grading course work, provide course content and develop new courses specifically for the Film & Moving Image major, participate in general curriculum development, serve on faculty committees and participate in faculty governance, and submitting final grades.

Assume appropriate liaison roles regionally (NYC to DC) with related professionals, faculty peers, and film/video production and post-production facilities for the purpose of developing and sustaining the program as well as internship and job opportunities for majors in the program and assist with recruitment of prospective students to the major.
