Job Title: Registered Veterinary Technician - Surgery, Day Shift
Reports to: Surgery Department Lead/Practice Manager
Position Summary: Responsibilities include high quality patient care, extensive knowledge and experience with complicated and/or critical anesthetic procedures, compassionate client communication, and efficient multitasking. RVT/LVT/CVT or VTS licensure required.
Essential Skills Required:
- Fear-free and "less is more" approach to patient restraint and handling.
- Familiarity with the principles of triage and a working knowledge of vital parameters for canine and feline patients. Additional knowledge of customized anesthetic protocols and ventilator usage.
- Time management and efficiency regarding the Surgery schedule and in house patients.
- Willingness and open-mindedness to learn about Skyline's protocols and patient care policies.
- Able to work on your feet for the majority of the day. Walking, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Kindness and empathy with clients both in person, over the phone, and via email regarding various concerns and questions with relation to surgical procedures. Relates to people in an open, friendly, and accepting manner. Works cooperatively with people who have different backgrounds, knowledge, styles, talents, perspectives, values, and beliefs
- Remains calm and reasonable amidst tense or stressful situations.
- The ability to work as a team and divide and conquer various tasks throughout the Surgery department and Skyline as a whole.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.

Surgery Technician Responsibilities:
- Fear free patient handling and restraint for procedures and tests such as Doppler blood pressure, venipuncture, IVC placement, sample collection, etc.
- Medical math and drug calculations (including but not limited to fentanyl bolus and CRI, lidocaine bolus and CRI as directed by the Surgeon).
- Familiarity with setup and preparation for urgent procedures such as GDVs, Cholecystectomies, Torsions and Orthopedics (emergent and not).
- Knowledge of surgical emergencies and what constitutes immediate intervention by a licensed veterinarian.
- Medication refills (in house and outside pharmacy) and answering medication questions from clients.
- Handling all client concerns in a timely manner as dictated by the Surgery Department guidelines.
- Keeping the appointment schedule running smoothly and on time.
- Awareness of in house surgical candidates that are waiting for other services and which ones take precedence.
- Working knowledge of diagnostics and equipment including Heska blood machines, EPOC sample processing, PCV/TS, and noninvasive blood pressure monitoring.
- Willingness to expand one's knowledge base regarding complicated anesthetic and extensive pain management protocols, and medication pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and the secondary complications from each.
- Cleaning routinely and resetting the surgical suite and surgical table between each patient.
- Open to cross training in other areas of the hospital to assist other departments if needed.

General Employee Responsibilities:
- Adheres to all hospital policies, standards, and procedures, including but not limited to uniforms, grooming, smoking, and personal calls or texts, as stated in the handbook
- Assisting in hospital wide duties such as helping ICU, laundry, and trash and recycling removal.
- Serves as a representative of the clinic, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration, and a positive attitude in all interactions with clients, patients, and other staff members
- Demonstrates initiative in everyday duties by seeking other work during down times, assisting other employees, and filling in for other employees as needed
- Adheres to the posted work schedule. Arrives for work promptly and begins work at the start time
- Follows hospital policies for reporting lateness or absences
- Clocks in and out with time clock at the beginning and end of each day and during breaks
- Organizes work area and exercises time-management skills to maximize personal and hospital efficiency
- Prioritizes tasks and handles multiple tasks in a calm, organized manner
- Communicate efficiently and appropriately to all staff members
- Attends departmental and staff meetings
Reporting Function:
- Reports directly to the Surgery Team Lead, Surgeon or Medical Director for medical and patient care questions or concerns.
- Internal issues, performance questions, or other concerns can be reported to the Practice Manager or Human Resources.
- Provides regular communication and feedback to the Surgery team about either discomfort with certain tasks or feeling confident with expanding the task list.
