Education Reporter
The Iowa City Press-Citizen/press-citizen.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking an education reporter to produce enterprise and watchdog work focusing on the University of Iowa and on issues and trends in K-12 education.
This beat offers the opportunity to cover a major public research university with an acclaimed medical center and a renowned writers’ workshop.
The K-12 part of the beat will focus on how education policy affects children and their parents as well as taxpayers and community stakeholders.
This reporter’s portfolio will extend beyond what’s happening in the classroom to include almost anything involving the lives of children, from bullying to a measles outbreak.
A background in education reporting is preferred but not required. A deep curiosity about education trends is a must.
This reporter is expected to consistently break exclusive news. He or she will identify, produce and post stories, photos and video quickly and accurately across mobile, desktop and social media platforms.
This reporter also will handle general assignments and breaking news.
Iowa City is a hub of college sports, entertainment and culture, anchors the fast-growing Iowa City-Cedar Rapids business corridor and regularly makes national “best places to live” lists.

- Contribute to the community’s greater good through impactful journalism.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least two years of professional journalism experience.
- High-level writing, communication and time management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work well on deadline.
- This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
- Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer drug screen, motor vehicle record check and background check.
We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
- Your resume – one to two pages.
- A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
- Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what you’ve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.
It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
