Position Purpose

As part of a team, the Acquisitions Specialist performs a variety of library information acquisitions tasks including ordering, receiving, and invoicing of library materials in all physical and digital formats. Collaborates with other team and department members to provide excellent services to library personnel and to the Dartmouth community. In addition to general knowledge they also provide expertise in one or more specific acquisitions activities.Working closely with both vendors and selectors, the person in this position ensures that selector orders are placed accurately and in a timely manner. Trains others in various acquisitions activities and mentor new members of the department. Continuously looks for ways to improve workflows.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp

Associates plus 3+ years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

● Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and technical problem solving skills.

● A demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a complex and changing digital environment.

● Familiarity and experience with library resources such as journals, databases, and monographs.

● Familiarity and experience with library management systems.

● Customer service experience.

Preferred Qualifications

● Bachelor's degree.

● Familiarity with or expertise in the library management system currently used by Dartmouth Library.

● Familiarity with basic accounting procedures.

Description

Provides expertise and leadership in one or more of the acquisitions processes. Trains others and mentors new department members on using the library management system and acquisitions processes. Leads staff or student assistants on projects or ongoing processes.

Orders materials across formats, approves orders, and processes renewals. Checks in and processes print materials and verifies online materials are activated. Processes invoices.

Maintains expertise in the library management system and ensures the accuracy of information within. Provides knowledge of various publishers, vendors, and the unique aspects of ordering resources in various formats, from various sources, and in different languages. Prepares and updates documentation for acquisitions processes.

Communicates with selectors and vendors to answer questions, verify that orders are processed correctly, and troubleshoot problems. Provides critical information to selectors for use in their collection development responsibilities.

Looks for long-term and systematic solutions for problems when possible and, in consultation with their team leader, has the authority to implement fixes and improvements to processes and workflows.

Actively engages in ongoing professional development. Stays current with trends in acquisitions and the application of information technology in libraries. Contributes to the profession through involvement in relevant national or regional library associations.

Participates in team and department meetings, training, and activities, and works closely with other team and department members to provide excellent library acquisitions services to Library personnel and to the Dartmouth Community. To provide context for their work, this person will participate on Library or College committees.
